Car Accident Insurance Claim | Call the Police

After being involved in any type of vehicle collision, the first thing you need to do is call the police. This is true even if there is relatively minor damage to your vehicle, such as being rear-ended at a stop sign. The police will then file a police report. This provides documentation that the accident took place. You will want to get the officer’s name and badge number, and ask for a copy of the police report, if possible.

Car Accident Insurance Claim | Take Pictures of the Vehicles

While you are waiting for the responding officer, you will also need to take pictures of the vehicles and gather evidence. From a safe distance away from traffic, take pictures of both vehicles, making sure to capture the damage from as many angles as possible. Any debris will also need to be photographed.

While you’re at it, you will also want to collect statements and contact information from any witnesses who saw the crash. This testimony will be important if the at-fault driver’s insurance company attempts to dispute your claim.

Car Accident Insurance Claim | Do Not Speak to the Other Driver’s Insurance Company

Don’t admit guilt. Don’t apologize. As a matter of fact, don’t even talk to anyone about the accident. Especially the other driver’s insurance company. Speaking to your own insurance company is fine and is, in fact, a requirement. However, the goal of the other driver’s insurance company is to minimize their damages by disputing your claim. Don’t give them a reason to do so by answering their phone calls.
